The symbols used by groups of people to represent themselves and their identity or ideas have different values according to whether the group is perceived as powerful and oppressive or as powerless and oppressed. To attack the symbols of oppressors is a valid mode of civil disobedience whilst attacking the symbols of the oppressed is the action of a dictator or tyrant.
