The symbols used by groups of people to represent themselves and their identity or ideas have different values according to whether the group is perceived as powerful and oppressive or as powerless and oppressed. To attack the symbols of oppressors is a valid mode of civil disobedience whilst attacking the symbols of the oppressed is the action of a dictator or tyrant. The architect of the WTC, Minoru Tamasaki, said this about the building – “‘The World Trade Center should, because of its importance, become a living representation of man’s belief in humanity, his need for individual dignity, his belief in the cooperation of men, and through this cooperation his ability to find greatness.”
